My father, a US citizen, was admitted to this hospital for severe respiratory distress while traveling. He had no history of lung illness, so we were very confused about his symptoms and struggled to understand the purpose of various treatments and medications administered to him. The language barrier with the staff (which was expected, and only partially alleviated with translation apps) made the situation even more stressful and opaque.

The hospital's priority was to stabilize his lungs so we could travel home to the US for further care, and in that regard they succeeded. However, even when a CT scan showed clear evidence of malignancy, we received conflicting interpretations of the results. One doctor explained it appeared cancerous, while another said "don't worry, it's nothing." Upon arriving in the US, we quickly confirmed the cancer diagnosis.

Not once during his eight-day stay in Morocco did we feel that we truly understood what was going on. We were left to wait for long hours without any idea of the next step, any indication of his overall prognosis, or any real clue about anything. To be fair, this isn't entirely dissimilar to healthcare in the US, where the system is also a mess. But this place also had an air of petty corruption: they were quick to bill our insurance for every charge possible, and we were asked to pay out of pocket for extra things on top of that, like a fee for a family member spending the night in the room (!).
