What people mention
It dates back to at least the 12th century, when it was owned by the Palatine Counts of Lomello. Destroyed by Barbarossa in 1154 and by the Visconti troops of Facino Cane in 1404, it was rebuilt for a branch of the powerful Beccaria family, who owned it for centuries. Upon the extinction of the Beccaria family, it passed to the noble Isimbardi family, who owned it until the abolition of the fiefdom. Following these changes, today the castle features a mix of styles (austere fortress on the exterior, elegant Baroque on the interior). It holds important memories, linked to the rescue of the future Pope Leo X from the French in 1512. Today, the castle can be used for events (in a few months it will also have a B&B inside...) and can be visited by contacting the gracious owners, Silvio and Giovanna, who have long been committed with care and attention to the progressive restoration of the ancient castle. An example to follow...
Because it's a place rich in history. Events, ceremonies, conferences, and exhibitions are held here.
🏰🤩LOMBARD PEARLS Pieve del Cairo, a village with an ancient agricultural tradition in the province of Pavia, lies on the edge of Lomellina, separated from Piedmont by the waters of the Po River. 🏰Beccaria Castle, located in the center of the village, is an important monument, among the largest in the province of Pavia. Its majesty is evidenced by its imposing façade, an impressive gate ravelin with a noble coat of arms. Today, the privately owned castle is a farm producing rice, the flagship crop of Lomellina. 🚜 🏰The castle is listed as a FAI monument and can be visited upon request during special openings.
Ancient castle from the 14th century.
Really suggestive
Among the largest in the entire Lomellina region, Beccaria Castle is particularly interesting for the diverse stylistic phases evident in its architecture. While the corner towers and quadrilateral layout highlight the features of a 14th-century fortress (particularly noteworthy is the imposing entrance ravelin, with its noble coat of arms and the recesses of the drawbridge bolts still perfectly visible), other parts of the castle reveal the alterations carried out between the 17th and 18th centuries. The only drawback is its imperfect state of preservation.
Beautiful castle!! The owners always try to keep it in top condition. Mrs. Giovanna is very kind and helpful!! It's worth a visit.
What can I say about this castle? It's the largest castle in Lomellina, but the guided tour by the "castellana" is incredibly short: about 30 minutes! The "castellana's" charm makes up for the lack of explanatory historical and cultural content, focusing on rumors and gossip-level anecdotes, alternating with "foolish" language to elicit a smile or a laugh. The furnishings lack historical value. Eleven rooms are open to visitors, including the owners' living quarters. The €15 ticket price is not worth it, even if coffee is included.
