It's amazing! Pure Tangier!
Great cafe with a beautiful view of the city.
For some reason, I’d convinced myself that “since I’m in Tangier, I simply have to stop by this café." This place doesn’t have a menu. They only serve coffee and mint tea, both for 20 MAD, cash only. It’s very simple. The staff are unassuming and friendly. I don’t mind cigarette smoke, but I 'm not good at the smell of marijuana. So, unfortunately, I couldn’t stay long. Still, I was left with a vague feeling that this was indeed the kind of café I should stop by.
Good Work
This is an institution. Lot of history in this place. Great to grab coffee or atay anytime
Go to Café Baba in the upper Médina for the nostalgia of the days of Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton's annual soirees at nearby Sidi Hosni. Café Baba is where The Rolling Stones hung out smoking kif amongst the natives. It was also a popular late-1960s and early-1970s Tangier hangout for the "hippies". It is located up some steep steps off Rue Amrah. Be careful when walking up the steps since there is no handrail. Do not expect luxury, as the place really is on the dumpy side, which is part of its expected seedy charm. Many young people and tourists come here for an overpriced mint tea (20 Dirhams) or to smoke or play dominoes while looking out at the partial beach and city views down below in the distance. Nowadays, Barbara Woolworth Hutton's historic palace Sidi Hosni is still there, but it is privately owned; unfortunately, her Tangier home is now overwhelmed by a looming and pretentious towering house constructed directly next door that is way too large and grand for the area. Try Café Baba at least once if you feel like slumming. Be sure to look at the many photos on the walls of various celebrities who have visited this place. Café Baba has reliable WiFi. If you like the Jamaican reggae music of Bob Marley, it is continuously played here on one of the televisions. No credit or debit cards; pay only in Dirhams. There is no heating or air conditioning.
We ordered three cafe au lait and cost was 39MAD. Service was fast and pleasant. The coffees were excellent. Sat enjoying the lovely view over the marina and coast. Super garden overlook. I forgot whose it was but she was the first lady to own a Rolls Royce in Tangiers. Seems a very Bonhomie place. Very laid back. With the open windows, you get a wonderful breeze blowing in to cool you off and even though people smoke inside, it becomes a pleasant whiff here and there blown by the breeze and isn't overwhelming (non smoker). The coffee was certainly a different level to that of our 5 star hotel so highly recommended.
Amazing view from the cafe with a strong coffee
